Ego depletion, an influential theory in psychology, may have just been debunked.

Articles like this, for quantitative research psychologists (rat people who worship the god of Statistics) are terrifying. Qualitative research psychologists (mostly philosophers, phenomenologists, existential analysts of the human condition-referred to as “humanists” by the APA) just quietly smile. And as far as “ego depletion” goes, I am confused. For Freud the ego was the the final development in human development from prior states of Id and super-ego. Physical or mental disability, that commonly happens in older adults, may lead to a regression to prior states of super-ego or id. But as far as a “depletion” goes, I think the research subjects just got tired. How long had it been since they ate?

In research, studies are set up to either prove or disprove preconceived notions. In the end the data is subjected to statistical analysis. The discipline of Statistics is a numerical-probability game that hucksters and politicians can manipulate to sell something or get votes. Scientists and other researchers are under scrutiny by their peers and have no such freedom, hopefully. An oncologist can tell his patient they got all the cancer. His peers will want to know the degree of confidence that this is so. Even if the odds are 95 to 5 that the patient has five more years of life, the patient could be one of the five.

Rats used in research experiments are special creatures. They have been born, raised, bred, and die in controlled environments. As such they make really good creatures for statistical study. Human beings, on the other hand, are so diverse that to bring a bunch of them together for a statistical study can introduce previously unidentified or unmeasured factors into the conclusions. And as the study is replicated and replicated over time, these unidentified and unmeasured factors can pile up so that what was not considered important at the start turns out to be very important after all. In Evolutionary Genetics they differences are known as mutations.

(As you may have figured out by now I am of the qualitative school of thought. My life experiences have convinced me that when quantitative statistical research is done outside of the field of natural science, our infinite human spirits refuse to fall in step with our rational expectations.)

This article requires focused attention and I hope your egos don’t get “depleted” in the process. The video at the end can be thought of as a “reward” for your efforts.

Why does France insist school pupils master philosophy? – BBC News

Yes! Shout it from the rooftops!

Philosophe est très nécessaire pour tout l’humanité et pour la paix universelle!

Finding peers in the States who has a love for Continental thought (philosophical/existential psychology) is très difficile. I knew a retired dentist who went to high school in Norway and studied all this profound stuff. Lucky guy. Fairhaven College at Western Washington University let me design my second bachelor degree around this theme. And that got me into graduate psychology school at Seattle University.

And this transpired after a run-in with some neo-Nazis in New York and reading Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning.

Both qualitative (cultural or humanistic) and quantitative (scientific/statistical) study are important in psychology. And there are rabid spokespersons for either one or the other among us on this side of the Atlantic.

Här kommer en YouTube-video till dig! Dr. Cornell West: Race Matters

For those times when I need to be lifted up, Dr. Cornell West always seems to deliver. We were both raised in Sacramento about the same time, but not in the same neighborhood. At times my racist parents would talk with derision about Cornell’s neighborhood and the people living there. When I would question them why they felt that way, the retort was: “You’ll know better when you grow up!”

Well, I did grow up. I spent some time in the South when I was in the Service. I came home from Europe to the race riots in Watts and other black ghettos happening throughout the US. Having lived through the trauma of the JFK Assassination while overseas, I now got to see Bobby Kennedy’s murder live on TV. Before that I was working at an accounting firm when Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered. Racists in the office didn’t care. He was just another “God-damn nigger”.

The writings of Cornell West always seemed relevant to the human condition for me. Like Bell Hooks, Audre Lourde, Amir Baraka, and Malcolm X, his words spoke to my heart. In my spiritual journey, his words touched the depths of my being, no matter what faith, or lack thereof, I was struggling with. In 2014 Dr. West was the Featured Speaker at the General Assembly of the Unitarian Universalist Association in Portland. He was well received, even by the atheists in this controversial group of free thinkers.

Dr. Cornell West has many, many presentations on YouTube. The Cornell West Reader is also worth your time.

Marrying robots, killing with drones, and making empty selfies

Rollo May, Blaise Pascal, Søren Kierkegaard…The Defiant Power of the Human Spirit (Frankl). It is SO REFRESHING to encounter another existentialist on this side of the Pond. The Positivist mindset has its place in physical science, but for unpacking la condition humaine (the human Dasein [being in the world]) these elements cannot be measured or analyzed. Rather they constitute the emotions and feelings that are innate within each one of us, of which further dissection and reduction would be absurd.

Today everything has become a spectacle, including writing. My title probably caught your eye, as it was intended. But now I would like to tell you a personal story about a man whose brilliant work foreshadowed and dissected the issues of my title before it existed. In this he was prophetic, and it is why his work is so important. He always insisted that true artists were able to uncover society’s conflicts before they emerged consciously. Though a psychologist by profession, he was in this sense an artist as well.

His name, Rollo May, has disappeared from public discourse in this era of biological psychology and psychiatry. This great American thinker and writer was the man who introduced existential psychology to the United States. And though he died twenty-one years ago, his prescient voice begs to be heard in our current conditions.

America’s Mania for Positive Thinking and Denial of Reality Will Be Our Downfall

Positive Thinking that is not founded on the immeasurable, indefinable foundation of wisdom will inevitably lead to destruction. Or as Cornel West has said, “Let the phones be smart. You have to be wise.” In my zeal to rush through my reading, I didn’t want to waste time reading this. I’m glad I did. And I recommend you “waste time” and do the same.

The ridiculous positivism, the belief that we are headed toward some glorious future, defies reality.

By Chris Hedges

Source: Alternet

The naive belief that history is linear, that moral progress accompanies technical progress, is a form of collective self-delusion. It cripples our capacity for radical action and lulls us into a false sense of security. Those who cling to the myth of human progress, who believe that the world inevitably moves toward a higher material and moral state, are held captive by power. Only those who accept the very real possibility of dystopia, of the rise of a ruthless corporate totalitarianism, buttressed by the most terrifying security and surveillance apparatus in human history, are likely to carry out the self-sacrifice necessary for revolt.

The yearning for positivism that pervades our corporate culture ignores human nature and human history. But to challenge it, to state the obvious fact that things are…
