BBC News: Europe’s ‘unfair’ Apple tax ruling sparks US anger

There is a “Foreign Tax Credit” tax relief provision in the U.S. Tax Code that allows U.S. taxpayers a credit against their U.S. taxes for taxes paid to foreign countries. Unlike your typical U.S. expats living out their golden years in sunny climes overseas, Apple is a super high-roller taxpayer the EU and the US are fighting over for multi-billion-dollar tax payments.

This controversy doesn’t just affect Apple. There are other multi-nationals doing business in Europe and elsewhere that are required to conform to international tax treaties as well as tax laws in their own countries.

While Apple Inc. may or may not be adversely affected by WHO gets the tax payments, there is a real need for all actors on the world stage to work things out for the sake of fairness and future investment planning.

I saw this on the BBC News App and thought you should see it:

Europe’s ‘unfair’ Apple tax ruling sparks US anger_90975033_apple.store.sf.g.jpgThe US Treasury criticises ‘unfair’ tax rulings by the European Commission, following a demand that Apple hands over €13bn in unpaid tax.

Random Tanker 30 augusti 2016: Mx, political correctness and “Taxi Driver” English/Swedish

Quote: If I didn’t define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people’s fantasies for me and eaten alive. –Audre Lorde

English
MX
Yesterday I received an email from a psychology graduate student who used the gender-neutral designation “Mx”. The above quote by Audre Lorde I “borrowed” from what they wrote. Encountering this designation for a gender nonconforming person was a first for me. I wish them the best in their studies to become a practicing Psychologist. (And I hope I got their pronouns right!)

Link to Wikipedia.org post on “Mx”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mx_(title)https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mx_(title)

Will the 21st Century be the era of gender avoidance or erasure? More and more cultures are recognizing the reality of people who don’t fit into the historic binary gender classification. And like the woman wearing the “scarlet letter” they is rubbing this into the faces of academia, health practitioners, and future employers.

Bravo!!!

TAXI DRIVER
Travis, the protagonist in “Taxi Driver” was a Marine veteran who had problems sleeping. So he got a job driving a cab at night. This job gave him a perspective on the human condition back in 1976, unfettered by political correctness.

Even though the Stonewall Riot happened in 1969, gay people were still referred to as “fags”, “fruits”, and “fairies” in the film. T joined up with LGB not until the 1990s. And I (Intersex) is still deeply closeted in the States. A lot HAS changed in the last 40 years as far as political correctness goes. But have things changed deep down in the human heart?

Perhaps the “saving grace” for the human condition is our limited lifespan. Things get better through attrition. The racism, homophobia, etc. internalized within me will go away when I go away. What younger generations have internalized from their generations will go away in like manner.

How else can we live with our sins?

US District Court (8/26/16) Judge Thomas Schroeder Ruling on North Carolina HB2 – Memorandum Opinion…

A preliminary injunction has been granted by District Court Judge Thomas Schroeder against defendants of North Carolina HB2, also known as the “bathroom bill”. This court action returns the plaintiff’s to the time immediately before HB2 was rushed through the State Legislature and hastily signed by the Governor. As such, preliminary relief has been granted to the plaintiffs whose gender identities differ from the sex assigned at birth on their birth certificates.

If one reads the entire memorandum decision (see link below), the existence of legal complications on both sides of the issue will become apparent. For instance, the State has the obligation to regulate safe and equal public restroom use for public safety purposes, but it does NOT have the right to subject bathroom patrons to unsafe and dangerous situations by forcing them to use bathrooms based on a doctor’s decision at birth.

Statistics on just how many transgender people there are in the US are dubious and questionable. In this decision the given percentage is 0.3% of the total population. Another number commonly ban-tied about is 700,000 of total population. If 99.7% of total population is non-transgendered and there has never been any prior problems with transgender bathroom use, why the rush to dump HB2 on the residents of North Caolina?

There are already laws against persons entering public bathrooms for nefarious purposes such as voyeurism, peeping, harassment, etc. So the argument that HB2 would further protect the public interest was not recognized by the Court.

Plaintiffs argued that HB2 was unnecessary and imposed an undue burden on a minority group entitled to equal protection under the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. This motion was DENIED without prejudice by the Court, allowing for further determination on the merits of the case.

Would this legal action have occurred if this was NOT an election year? It smells to me that Republicans in North Carolina knew that HB2 would be knocked down at the Federal level. News media have milked this case for all it is worth. Having to churn something out daily to keep editors and advertisers happy is the bane of high-octane news organizations.

What Cops Need To Know To Better Understand Transgender People

As a four-year-old boy back in 1947 going through his mother’s clothes while she is at work, I would have never dreamed that being “this way” was worth more than a one-way trip to the state hospital. Yet in August 2016 this Huffington Post article, with a Department of Justice 12-minute, embedded police roll-call training video designed for officers interacting with the transgender community, has finally been published.

The Huffington Post, my blog, my Twitter page, and my Facebook page go all over the world. Yet how many police officers will ever see the embedded video? My last encounter with law enforcement was with an officer who could have used training when dealing with a transgender person. Fortunately, my papers were “in order” and he left me alone with only a confused look on his face.

Transgender persons are in the media limelight now with political rhetoric based on hatred, partisan politics, and ignorance. Transgender women are “all bathroom predators” and transgender men “don’t exist” for the most part. When will all this media hype that sells advertising and hustles votes result in another Orlando?

The Southern Poverty Law Center provides roll-call training videos for free to Police departments all over the US. YOU can educate your local Police/local activists by sending them a link to this video.

Man Who Burned Gay Couple With Boiling Water Gets 40 Years In Prison

During the day a lot of things come to light on my IPad as I peruse news feeds from around the world. The struggle for LGBTI human rights seems to highlight a continuum from peaceful acceptance and equality to acts of total human depravity, blind hatred, and mass murder.

This story from the Huffington Post is one of those where victimization and perpetration are clearly defined. But the story doesn’t end there. Prosecution as a hate crime is meant to hopefully deter others from acting out their internalized hatred towards those whose sexual orientation or gender identity may be offensive to them. The best thing for these potential criminals to do is stop worrying about how others live and clean up their own acts.

Being burned, sleeping or awake, is a horrible thing to endure. For readers who have endured being burned I know I am being trite saying this. The victim’s video in this post reveals the suffering he is still enduring and will probably endure for the rest of his life. The presence of the focused, listening female helped him let his deep feelings out. “Boys don’t cry?” Shit. When the pain cuts deep and doesn’t go away, you cry as much and as often as you need to get through what was done to you. There is no shame.

Despite Orlando and this thing, it IS getting better. But the struggle seems to be a forward and backward crawl at times. So we keep crawling against hatred, ignorance, violence, and death towards peace and equality.

What else can we do?

PODCAST: Preventing the young terrorist of tomorrow – former Taliban supporter says UN has key voi ce in global debate

Proactive versus reactive response is the only way to stem the flow of impressionable young people into the ranks of jihadist and other terrorist groups. Rather than focusing on the “theology” or lack thereof of the terrorist group, the motivations of the impressionable youth drawn to these groups must be explored and understood.

The lead program in this podcast tells a common story of surrender of conscience to a greater “good” embraced irrationally and impatiently by malleable people in need of a Savior, a Leader, Someone who WILL make their lives better. All they have to do is sign on, vote, donate, or perform some other action for this to happen. If you refuse to join the crowd, bullying, targeted violence, and other tactics promoting impotence and silence can be employed to control the resistant opposition.

In American history Charles Manson and his “family” and Jim Jones and his People’s Temple/Jonestown are two infamous, poignant examples of young lives ruined or terminated by blind surrender of self to an earthly “higher power”. As with modern-day groups this surrender does not happen overnight, but is a process of greater and greater involvement where the ability to escape from the inevitable becomes more and more difficult.

This three-hour podcast has other programs about the United Nations involvement in human rights and promoting world peace. Enjoy!

Commentary on Previous Post: “Psychologist-led VA Response…”

June 12, 2016 Orlando became a “household word” around the world. I applaud the actions of VA staff towards all of the LGBTI veterans who have served their country honorably. While I would so much like to write the Pulse Club shooting off as an isolated incident committed by a mentally-deranged person, I know that the vitriolic and hateful rhetoric that has marked this Presidential Election Campaign Season may encourage others to inflict more hate, violence, and death upon my LGBTI sisters and brothers.

When it comes to standing with victims of hate and violence, WE ARE ALL MENTAL HEALTH. I completed 18 months of psychotherapy with the VA on June 1, 2016. To stay stable I take my medications, attend AA regularly and stay away from controlling and manipulating persons, AKA bullies. Unfortunately, one of these “toxic types” is running for President. And since he cannot change his toxic ways, he continues to attract other toxic persons to be his constituency. If he doesn’t get elected, he tells his minions, it will be because the election was “rigged”.

Good God! Hasn’t Mr. Trump overstepped the bounds of free speech yet??????? He has incited a national riot if he doesn’t, like the little boy he is, get his way. While the usual BS campaign rhetoric is to be expected, and he has gotten the benefit of the doubt many times before, this is TOO MUCH!

Our Orlando sisters and brothers deserve much more than the usual silence and hope this incident will fade away.
