Random Tankar

Random Tankar (random thoughts) 31 december 2015

The link is to an hour-long chronicle for 2015 from SVT News. The link starts with a little boy washed up on a beach. I find this disturbing. It’s like he is just asleep. I want to take him in my arms and wake him up. You are warned. Du varnas. The link ends with him. Shit!

(Could it be that if we forget our young people all our schemes, big ideas, and ego-farts, don’t mean a thing?)

My cousin tells me my Swedish is getting “bättre och bättre”. More and more I am taking on her culture. No, I don’t understand every word uttered in this link. But with the video, and the language, both written and spoken, I can more and more get the general idea about what is going on.

To be told, as a little boy that I was NOT Swedish was a very cruel thing for my mother to do to me. Adults have a way of taking the anger meant for other adults and dumping on their kids. Having to keep secrets from the children for the sake of other adults is toxic parenting. The kids grow up…Let it stop with you!

Swedish Dads was a good report on BBC News. Seeing this and remembering the grieving fathers after the school massacre in Roseburg holding back their tears (boys don’t cry) makes me so sad. I know ladies transitioning to be men and I really hope they don’t take on this masculine dysfunction.

The FOSTERLAND series on SVT Play were not blocked from viewers in the Western Hemisphere. The stuff that is blocked, for the most part, I could care less about. The musical stuff is International and SVT Play had a lot of good things, especially the Sinatra thing, for Christmas.

American culture celebrates St. Patrick’s Day. St. Lucia Day should be more than a feast day for pious Catholics. Lussekatter tastes good with natural peanut butter. Sorry, Lena, för min skuld.

Hungarian gays, right-wing politicians, and the Østerlund Bridge. FOSTERLAND 3 of 4

There is a term for what happened to the journalist, translator, and cameraperson in this episode of Fosterland. We try so hard to stay distanced and objective in reporting things. Edmund Husserl had a German term for it. Zu den Sachen Selbst! To the things themselves. Just report what it there without changing things with your biases, prejudices, presumptions.

Our hearts have a proclivity to get in the way at times!

Greece, Golden Dawn, and the road to Sweden-English Subtitles 1 of 4

I doubt if your travel agent would like you to see this FOSTERLAND report if you are planning a fun-filled, fantasy vacation to sunny Greece. The Greek people have been through such harsh economic times and bank loans from major non-Greek banks are keeping them in the EU. In dire times like these, angry voices are raised, altercations occur, and conflicts arise. And a scapegoat is needed.

In Sweden the Dialogue Police string “crime scene” tape so that free speech may happen without violence. Integrating these new arrivals into Swedish life will take time. And just as in an overloaded, inflatable boat that has to be seaworthy for 100km (62 miles) in rough seas, there will be fearful times ahead.

Europe is seeing the largest shift in migration since WWII. And housing is the elephant in the living room that needed to be dealt with even before the migrants started arriving! I write this living in a part of the US that has a relatively low population. But affordable housing here is not easy to find, either.

Fosterland: Changes in Europe (English subtitles)

Like the rest of the world Europe is experiencing demographic and political changes. Whether or not what is happening is good, bad, or something else would depend on your life perspectives and experiences. In the end, hopefully, democratic processes will allow for changes to be made that are in the best interests of all concerned. The complaining won’t go away, but the body politic will hold together until the next election.

BBC News: Robert Spitzer, influential US psychiatrist, dies aged 83

The gays and lesbians were liberated from the stigma of mental illness in 1973, thanks to the work of Robert Spitzer. Such a move in Psychiatry has yet to happen for those of us whose affirmed gender is not the same as the gender assigned at birth.

Getting Transgender and Gender Nonconforming persons (TGNC) out of the DSM has its controversy. Living one’s affirmed gender usually requires a changeover in hormones and some surgical intervention. And the interventions may not be reversible if the TGNC person later on decides he/she (ze) made a mistake. Therefore, being TGNC cannot help but remain a medical and psychiatric issue.

Medical insurance companies tend to respond favorably to reimbursement based on treating medical disorders, not lifestyle changes. And in being successful with insurance companies one learns what to say so that one can get the medical services urgently needed. This mendacity is just the way things are at present.

The recent American Psychological Association guidelines for working with TGNC persons tell me that we are NOT crazy, we are growing in numbers as more and more of us find the courage to come out, and that we are here to stay. GET USED TO IT!

I saw this on the BBC News App and thought you should see it:

UN refugee agency seeks to protect displaced gays, lesbians as they face prejudice, violence

This is a training program designed to protect LGBTI people and to discourage discrimination and violence against this group of displaced persons. As a very comprehensive educational tool those choosing to participate in this learning experience will be required to sacrifice a large amount of their personal time.
